JCPRD beaches and marinas to end their summer seasons on Aug. 7
POSTED: 07/16/2016

Time is quickly winding down to take advantage of the summer season for two beaches and two marinas operated by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District. The facilities include: The Shawnee Mission Park Beach and Shawnee Mission Park Marina, both located in Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa; and Kill Creek Park Beach and Marina, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe.

All four facilities will close for their regular summer seasons on Aug, 7. Until then, Shawnee Mission Park Beach will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Also until Aug. 7, Kill Creek Park Beach will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 5 p.m., and Wednesday from noon to 3 p.m. Daily rates at either facility for children 12 and under adults over 50 are $3 for Johnson County residents or $3.50 for nonresidents. Admission for adults is $5 for Johnson County residents or $5.50 for nonresidents. Both beaches accept cash only.

Even though the beaches are closing, special weekly opportunities for triathletes to practice open water swimming will continue at Kill Creek Park Beach. On the specified nights, the beaches are open from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for this purpose. The cost is $4 per person for Johnson County residents or $4.50 per person for nonresidents. At Shawnee Mission Park, these are offered on Tuesday and Thursday through July 28, while at Kill Creek Park, they are offered every Monday through Aug. 29.

Also ending their summer operating hours on Aug. 7 are the marinas at both parks. Until then, Shawnee Mission Park Marina will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily (last rentals at 6 p.m.) and the Kill Creek Park Marina will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Both marinas offer boat rentals, including canoes, kayaks, pedal boats. In addition, Shawnee Mission Park offers paddleboards, which have a weight limit of 220 pounds. Rental rates are listed in the May through August Activities catalog, and on the District's website at www.jcprd.com. Fishing permits are also available at the marinas. Patrons should be aware that while the Shawnee Mission Park Marina now accepts credit cards, the Kill Creek Park Marina does not and neither facility accepts checks.

Following the close of the summer season, the Shawnee Mission Park Marina will continue to be open on weekends on Aug. 13 and 14, Aug. 20 and 21, Aug. 27 and 28, and Sept. 3 through 5.
