Mid-Summer’s Night Cache is July 29 in Shawnee Mission Park
POSTED: 07/07/2016

Looking for a way to keep the kids busy this summer? Try a modern-day scavenger hunt during a late July special event being offered by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

Mid-Summer’s Night Cache is the name of the event, which is for all ages and will take place beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 29, beginning under Shelter #2 in Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to hide and seek containers called "caches," which contain a logbook and a "treasure" - usually toys or trinkets. Participants will receive use of a GPS device (one per family), and an introductory "how to" session. After the hunt, participants will gather around one of the park’s fire pits for hotdogs and s’mores. For even more fun, consider attending this evening's family-friendly production of "Mary Poppins" at The Theatre in the Park beginning at 8:30 p.m., also in Shawnee Mission Park.

To find Mid-Summer’s Night Cache in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under fun for all and then under special events. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword "geocaching."

The cost for one two-hour event is $11 per person for Johnson County residents or $13 per person for nonresidents. A family rate for up to four people is also offered at a cost of $29 for Johnson County residents or $32 for nonresidents. Preregistration is required by July 25 for this program. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online at www.jcprd.com, click on the green "Register for Activities" button and complete a barcode search for 34236.

This program is also eligible for credit in the Environmental dimension for the JCPRD U holistic wellness program for participants ages three to 18. Participants can complete Achievement Classes (similar to academic grade levels) and earn Achievement Badges and Awards. To register for JCPRD U, call (913) 826-2950.

Printed copies of JCPRD’s Activities catalog are available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches.
