June 24 is initial deadline for 2016 Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon

June 24 is the initial deadline for the 32nd Annual Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon. This will be the fourth year the event is sponsored by Open Options (formerly United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Kansas City) as our title sponsor. The event will take place Sunday, July 10, in Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee. Entries will be limited to the first 700 entries. As a result of this event, Shawnee Mission Park will not open for public use until noon on this date.

The Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon is open to all individuals, ages 16 and older with participants competing in five-year age groups from 16 years old to 70 and older. The duathlon portion of the event was a new addition in 2015 and includes a 3.1-mile run and a 13.5-mike bike, followed by another 3.1-mile run.

The Triathlon Long Course consists of a 1,000-meter swim, followed by an 18-mile bike, and a 4.5-mile run inside Shawnee Mission Park. The Triathlon Short Course consists of a 500-meter swim, followed by a 9-mile bike, and a 3.1-mile run.

Registration fees for the three events are each different, but share deadlines. The fees for the Triathlon Long Course are $75 for individuals and $105 for teams until June 24. After June 24, the entry fee increases to $85 for individuals and $115 for teams, and increases again to $95 for individuals and $125 for teams after July 6. For the Triathlon Short Course, the fees are $70 for individuals and $100 for teams until June 24. After June 24, the entry fee increases to $80 for individuals and $110 for teams, and increases again to $90 for individuals and $120 for teams after July 6. For the Duathlon, the fees are $60 for individuals and $90 for teams until June 24. After June 24, the entry fee increases to $70 for individuals and $100 for teams, and increases again to $80 for individuals and $110 for teams after July 6. In addition to the above fees, runners who are not members of USA Triathlon (USAT) must pay a $15 daily user fee or purchase an annual membership for $50.

Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a finisher’s medal. Individual prizes will be awarded to the top three male, female, and team overall finishers in each of the courses. Individual awards will be presented to the top three athletes of each age division.

Friday packet pickup for participants will take place from Noon to 6 p.m. on July 8, at Elite Cycling, 10673 Mission Road, Leawood, in Mission Farms. Saturday packet pickup for participants will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on July 9 at Shawnee Mission Park in the Marina Parking Lot. Race day packet pickup is for out-of-town triathletes only and will take place from 5 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday under a tent near the Shawnee Mission Park Marina. Also on Saturday there will be a 4 p.m. orientation session near the registration tent. The orientation meeting is recommended for new athletes and anyone who would like to learn more about the course and event day details.

The Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon is a special event of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District and its title sponsor, Open Options. Other presenting sponsors are: Elite Cycling, TRiKC Triathlon Club, Hiland Dairy, KC Multisport, Children’s Mercy, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City, Swim Quik, Finan Chiropractic, C-Biz and MHM, Heartland Homecare, DEG, Experience BKD and the Kansas City Blazers. This program is also eligible for credit in the Physical dimension for the JCPRD U holistic wellness program for participants ages three to 18.
