|JCPRD Beaches & Marinas open for summer seasons in late May|
Two beaches and two marinas operated by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District are scheduled to open for their summer seasons beginning in late May. The facilities include: The Shawnee Mission Park Beach and Shawnee Mission Park Marina, both located in Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa; and the Kill Creek Park Beach and Marina, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe.
Shawnee Mission Park and Kill Creek Park beaches open for their seasons on May 30. Shawnee Mission Park Beach will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday through Aug. 7. Kill Creek Park Beach will be open only on weekends with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hours of noon to 6 p.m., also through Aug. 7. Daily rates at either facility for children 12 and under adults over 50 are $3 for Johnson County residents or $3.50 for nonresidents. Admission for adults is $5 for Johnson County residents or $5.50 for nonresidents. Both beaches accept cash only. Season passes are also available.
Both beaches also offer special weekly opportunities for triathletes to practice open water swimming. On the specified nights, the beaches are open from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for this purpose. The cost is $4 per person for Johnson County residents or $4.50 per person for nonresidents. At Shawnee Mission Park, these are offered on Tuesday and Thursday beginning May 31 through July 28, while at Kill Creek Park, they are offered every Monday from June 6 through Sept. 5.
The Shawnee Mission Park Marina has been open on Saturdays and Sundays since April 30, but starting on May 30 it will begin its summer season and be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily (last rentals at 6 p.m.) through Aug. 7. This marina will also be open weekends through Labor Day (Sept. 5). Also beginning May 30, Kill Creek Park Marina will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, also through Aug. 7, both marinas offer boat rentals, including pedal boats, canoe, and kayak rentals. Shawnee Mission Park also offers paddleboards, which have weight limit of 220 pounds. Patrons should be aware that while the Shawnee Mission Park Marina accepts credit cards, the Kill Creek Park Marina does not and neither facility accepts checks. Rental rates are listed in the Spring-Summer Activities catalog, available now, and on the District’s website at www.jcprd.com. Fishing permits are also available at both marinas. The marina at Heritage Park will not be operating this year.
