|JCPRD Lifeguards Honored with 2003 Silver National Aquatic Safety Award|
Lifeguards with the Johnson County Park and Recreation District were recently honored with the 2003 Silver National Aquatic Safety Award.
Lifeguard staff employed by the JCPRD include up to 55 guards in the summer and up to 30 in the winter at the Roeland Park Aquatic Center (RPAC) and about 20 additional summer guards at the beaches at Shawnee Mission and Kill Creek Parks.
The prestigious Silver National Aquatic Safety Award is presented by International Aquatic Safety Consultants Jeff Ellis & Associates Inc., for "consistently exceeding criteria for aquatic safety certification" during the year. According to a news release from the company, only agencies scoring in the top 27 percent of audit criteria receive this award. This is the first time JCPRD lifeguards have received this award.
RPAC Aquatics Coordinator Tom Horn said Jeff Ellis & Associates Inc. conducts safety audits at JCPRD facilities five times per year. Horn said audit activities include surreptitiously filming lifeguards at work to assess their attentiveness and professionalism, sneaking lifeless dummies into the pool to judge response time, random testing of guards, and checking administrative paperwork.
The Roeland Park Aquatic Center, located at 4843 Rosewood, Roeland Park, is owned by the city and is operated by the JCPRD. The two beach operations are located in District-owned and operated Parks and include Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Road, Olathe and Shawnee, and Kill Creek Park, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe.
