Final planning open house for future Big Bull Creek Park scheduled for Feb 22
POSTED: 02/09/2016

As one of the final steps in the master planning of Big Bull Creek Park, the Johnson County Park and Recreation District (JCPRD) will host a public open house on Monday, Feb. 22. The district will be seeking input on a preliminary draft of the development plan for the future park site located between Edgerton and Gardner in southwest Johnson County.

The open house will be held from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway. Planning consultants for the project will give a formal presentation of their preliminary proposals for the park at 5:45 p.m. The consultants, along with district staff, will be available throughout the open house to discuss the various proposed elements for the park, answer questions, and receive feedback.

For a two week period after the open house, there will be an additional opportunity for members of the public to provide input and help finalize the plan. Beginning the following morning, the preliminary draft will be available for review and comment on the Big Bull Creek Park Master Plan Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bbcmp. Comments can also be submitted by email to jcprd@jocogov.org.

Phased development of the 1,900+ acre park, which will become JCPRD’s fourth large regional park, is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2017. The district began purchasing the land for the park after voters approved acquisition funding through a special referendum in November, 1998.

The Big Bull Creek park site is trisected by Interstate 35 and 199th Street. The northern park boundary is US Highway 56, and the southern boundary is 215th Street. The district’s 22-acre Mildale Farm special event venue is located adjacent to the northwest corner of the property.

The district’s consulting team for the project is headed by RDG Planning and Design of Omaha. The team also includes CFS Engineers of Lawrence, and Applied Ecological Services of Brodhead, Wisc.
