|Dr. Mike Jurkovich is JCPRD Board Chair for 2004|
Finding ways of maximizing resources toward the ongoing implementation of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District's 20-year Master Action Plan (MAP 2020) is a top goal of the District's new Board Chair for 2004.
Dr. Mike Jurkovich of Overland Park was recently elected by his fellow Johnson County Park and Recreation District Board members to serve as chair for the coming year.
"The challenge is being a good steward of the new bond money the District recently received for park land acquisition and spending it wisely and appropriately," Jurkovich said. "We want to make sure that we're meeting the needs that were identified by our constituents."
The money he refers to is the $28 million in land acquisition and capital improvements funds the District recently realized through a late 2003 bond sale which was made possible through the inclusion of $2 million of debt financing approved by the Johnson County Commission as part of the District's 2004 budget.
"My goal is to accomplish as much as we can on MAP 2020 this year and to get as far down the road as we can and get caught up because we're behind. I also want to leave the District in the best shape possible for the next incoming officers."
The District continues to seek a dedicated sales tax for land acquisition as called for in MAP 2020.
Jurkovich has been a member of the District Board since 1993. He earlier served as chair in both 2000 and 1997 and he has previously served as secretary, treasurer, and vice chair. He is also currently serving as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Recreation and Park Association. In the past, he has been involved with the Olathe Chamber of Commerce, the Mission Area Chamber of Commerce, the Northwood Trails Homeowners Association, the Nottingham Forest South Homes Association, the Blue Valley Legislative Coalition and the Kansas Dental Association Board of Trustees.
Jurkovich is currently serving as Director of Health Care Services of Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. He also owns and operates an aircraft leasing company. He holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Missouri - Kansas City, and operated a private family dentistry practice in north Overland Park from 1984 until he retired from active practice in 1991.
Jurkovich and his wife, Barb, live in Overland Park. They are the parents of four children and have two grandchildren.
