Discover Downtown Atchison during new social outing for 50 Plus offered on Feb. 9
POSTED: 01/20/2016
Uncover the delights offered by the charming city centers of municipalities just outside the Kansas City metro area during two new social outings offered by the by the 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

The idea behind this program is that before suburban sprawl, each city’s downtown served as a hub of activity, and these areas continue to thrive with their own distinctive shops and restaurants. Participants are invited to relax while JCPRD provides the transportation, and enjoy shopping, and eating at a local restaurant.

This program is called Discover Downtown and will kick off on Feb. 9 with a trip to Atchison, Kan. Participants will visit the hometown of Amelia Earhart and namesake of US Senator David Rice Atchison. There will be time to shop at well-known establishments, experience an old fashioned soda fountain at a drug store, and enjoy a delicious lunch at Cedar Ridge Restaurant, where you feel like you are at your grandma’s table again.

To find this program in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under 50 Plus and then under special events. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “social outing.”

Participants will depart from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, and return at approximately 3:30 p.m. that day. The cost is $20 per person for Johnson County residents or $23 for nonresidents. Lunch costs are on your own. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online at, click on the green “Register for Activities” button and complete a barcode search for 32041.

Another Discover Downtown outing to Parkville, Mo., is scheduled for April 14.

While JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at (913) 826-3030 for space availability.

The JCPRD’s Activities catalog is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches.
