|Ready, Set, Hike sessions let children explore the Mill Creek Streamway Park starting Jan. 26|
Break out you hiking boots and let's go outside during a series of nature hikes for young children being offered beginning in late January by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District's Natureplay Preschool.
Ready, Set, Hike, is the name of a series of four hikes on the Mill Creek Streamway Park for ages three through five scheduled on the last Tuesday afternoon of each month from January through April. Hikes will take place rain or shine and regardless of temperatures and will each meet at 2 p.m. at the Barker Road Access at 5946 Barker Road north of Shawnee Mission Parkway, Shawnee.
The cost for each 60-minute session is $3 per person per session for Johnson County residents or $3.30 per person for nonresidents. To find these programs in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under preschool then under early childhood. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “early childhood.” For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online at www.jcprd.com, click on the green “Register for Activities” button and complete a search for the barcodes listed below.
The first hike is set for Jan. 26 and is called "Winter Wonderland" (barcode 32410). Participants will get some fresh air during this winter hike. Other sessions will include: "Winter Bird Watch" on Feb. 23 (barcode 32414); "Signs of Spring" on March 29 (barcode 32415); and "Trees are Terrific" on April 26 (barcode 32416).
Natureplay Preschool is a discovery-based learning program for ages three through five. While the program offers half-day preschool with two-, three-, to five-days-a-week options, these new stand-alone programs are meant to supplement other learning opportunities and provide children extended opportunities for outdoor exploration. Natureplay Director Rosanna Munoz holds degrees in biology and early childhood education has been leading JCPRD early childhood programs since 2002. For questions about Natureplay Preschool or the outdoor fun programs, call Munoz at (913) 826-2958.
These programs are also eligible for credit in the Environmental dimension for the JCPRD U holistic wellness program for participants ages three to 18. Participants can complete Achievement Classes (similar to academic grade levels) and earn Achievement Badges and Awards. To register for JCPRD U, call (913) 826-2950.
The JCPRD's Activities catalog is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches.
