|JCPRD To Experiment with Earlier Winter Park Hours at Two Parks During November|
Earlier winter opening hours at two Johnson County Park and Recreation District Parks will be the subject of a month-long experiment during November.
During a special meeting conducted Oct. 29, the District's Board directed staff to implement a 6:30 a.m. opening time for Shawnee Mission Park, 79th and Renner Road, Shawnee; and Heritage Park, 16050 Pflumm Road, Olathe, beginning Nov. 1. Under normal winter park hours which begin on Nov. 1, the majority of District parks will be open from 7:30 a.m. through 8 p.m. daily through Feb. 28 when they revert back to summer hours of 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Board's action does not change the closing time at the two parks.
The extended hours at Shawnee Mission and Heritage parks are in response to requests from the public and are meant to accommodate early-morning park usage including fishing and use of the parks' popular off-leash dog areas.
During its Nov. 19 regular meeting, the Board will review the results of the earlier opening time and make a determination if the extended hours will be offered after Nov. 30. It is anticipated Board members will consider the amount of additional park usage versus the additional costs of opening the parks earlier.
