|Northern portion of Mill Creek Streamway Park to be closed beginning Oct. 7 for trail maintenance project|
Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 7, a half-mile portion of the Gary L. Haller Trail in the Mill Creek Streamway Park in Shawnee will be closed for a trail maintenance project, Johnson County Park & Recreation District officials announced.
The trail will be closed from the Okun Bridge, located immediately behind the Okun Fieldhouse in the Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Drive, and will be closed north to the Wilder Road Access Point. There is no detour for this closure, which is expected to take approximately 30 days to complete, and is very weather-dependent.
During the closure, trail users will be able to access the Stump Park Trail Spur from the south, and the restroom, shelter, and playground at the Wilder access point from the North. Nelson Island will only be accessible from the Wilder access point during this project.
JCPRD Landscape architect Jim Wilson explained the need for this project and some of the unique logistical challenges involved.
"It's an asphalt surface that's failing and in need of pavement maintenance because of age," Wilson said. "It's the original pavement that's got to be 20-some years old and it's past its lifespan. We're going to use a concrete surface for the new surface because our access for heavy equipment has been cut off by expansions at the landfill and expansions on the railroad line, so there's no way to get anything that weighs as much as a paver or asphalt truck to this area any more."
