Cars in the Park event on Sept. 26 benefits Special Olympians
POSTED: 09/08/2015
About 200 vehicles and 1,000 spectators are expected to attend the annual Cars in the Park car show on Saturday, Sept. 26, in the marina parking lot in Shawnee Mission Park.

The event, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., is one of two major annual fundraisers for JCPRD’s Special Olympics and Special Populations programs. For spectators, admission to the show is free and concessions will be available.

The show typically attracts an eclectic mix of cars, trucks, and motorcycles, from Model A’s to modern and customized vehicles. Part of the fun is seeing what area residents dust off and retrieve from their garages to display. Participant choice judging will be used for awards. The show will conclude with a cruise through Shawnee Mission Park at 2 p.m.

All proceeds from Cars in the Park benefit the JCPRD’s Special Olympics / Special Populations department. Specifically, these funds are typically used to acquire uniforms and pay for transportation to events.

For anyone interested in entering the show, vehicle registrations are being taken through the day of the event. All participants must be registered and on-site by noon to be judged. The fee is $20 per vehicle until the day of the show when it increases to $25. For participants, there will be door prizes and a 50/50 pot. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To see this program online at, click on the green “Register for Activities” button and complete a barcode search for 29310.

For businesses, Cars in the Park also offers sponsorship opportunities and booth space during the event.

To learn more or to register for the event, call Special Populations Coordinator Kelly Reilly at (913) 831-3355 or (913) 826-3027.

Shawnee Mission Park is located at 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee.
