July T.A.K.E. Self Defense Seminars for 12 and older set for two locations in Overland Park
POSTED: 06/26/2015

The Ali Kemp Educational (T.A.K.E.) Foundation recently completed its tenth year of presenting a self-defense program meant to help fight the kind of violence which killed a 19-year-old Leawood resident during the summer of 2002. You're invited to join the 55,000-plus -strong and growing number of women and girls who have completed the training when the seminar is offered in mid- and late-July during two separate seminars in Overland Park.

A July 18 presentation is set at the Aubry Bend Middle School, 12501 W. 175th St., Overland Park, while a July 25 presentation will take place at the Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park. Both programs begin at 10 a.m. on a Saturday.

"These programs are open to the public including any girl 12 years and older and women of any age" said Corporate Community Wellness Manager Jill Leiker. "Our oldest women has been 90 years old so gather your friends, neighbors and family and join us for this life-changing class. It is the best two hours you will spend this year."

Participants are encouraged to bring a friend as portions of the curriculum use a partner and mothers and daughters or good friends make great teams. Participants will learn basic techniques which could save their lives and thwart an attack.

These programs are being presented by the City of Overland Park and Blue Valley Recreation in cooperation with The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation.

The self-defense seminar was designed by Leiker, a professional self-defense trainer, in consultation with local law enforcement agencies after the idea for the program was brought to local recreation agencies by representatives of the Kemp family.

A donation of $10 is appreciated, but not required, for each of the two-hour programs. Advance registration is appreciated but walk ups are welcome. To register for these programs or to check for additional local classes, go to www.takedefense.org.
