Celebrate Arbor Day during Nature Explorers home school program on April 2
POSTED: 03/11/2015

Arbor Day and trees are the topics of an intergenerational nature program designed to supplement and support home school efforts being offered in early April at the Johnson County Park & Recreation District's Ernie Miller Nature Center in Olathe.

The program is called Nature Explorers is for youth ages six to 12 with a parent. This program lets participants explore nature and animals around the Ernie Miller Nature Center. Park naturalists present these stand-alone educational programs, which take place on a Thursday. If the weather permits, these sessions will be held outdoors and participants should dress for outdoor exploration. Parents will also receive tips on how to weave outdoor exploration into their lessons.

During the April 2 program called "In the Green Forest," participants will celebrate Arbor Day and learn about trees. Participants will also take a hike in the forest, complete with a stop at "the wishing tree," and discover how trees help people and animals. To find this program in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under youth and then under nature & outdoors. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword "home school."

This program will begin at 3 p.m. The cost for one 90-minute program is $3.50 per person for Johnson County residents and $4 per person for nonresidents. Preregistration is required. A parent must register with each child.

For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online at www.jcprd.com, follow the "Register for Activities" link and complete a barcode search for 26527.

This program is also eligible for credit in the Environmental dimension for the new JCPRD U holistic wellness program for participants ages three to 18. Participants can complete Achievement Classes (similar to academic grade levels) and earn Achievement Badges and awards. To register for JCPRD U, contact Sarah Shaw at (913) 826-2953 or at sarah.shaw@jocogov.org.
