Feb. 20 is registration deadline for Girls on the Run track program for grades 3-5
POSTED: 02/04/2015

Educating and preparing girls in grades three through five for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living is the goal of a track program being offered by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

This program is called Girls on the Run. Using a well-researched curriculum, the program teaches life lessons through fun interactive games combined with training for a noncompetitive end of season 5K event on Sunday, May 17, at Corporate Woods, Overland Park. The registration deadline for the spring session is Feb. 20.

Girls on the Run is offered at 5:45 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday beginning March 2 at the Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee. The cost for 20 90-minute sessions is $135 for Johnson County residents or $149 for nonresidents. After registering, participants will receive forms to fill out via email, so they can return them at the first class.

To find this program in the JCPRD Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under youth, then under sports. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword “track.” Printed copies of JCPRD’s Activities catalog are available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches. To register for this program, contact www.gotrkc.org.

This program is also eligible for credit in the Social dimension for the new JCPRD U holistic wellness program for participants ages three to 18. Participants can complete Achievement Classes (similar to academic grade levels) and earn Achievement Badges and awards. To register for JCPRD U, contact Sarah Shaw at (913) 826-2953 or at sarah.shaw@jocogov.org.

Adults 18 and older are invited to make a difference for the Girls on the Run program by volunteering as coaches for the program. Coaches work closely with Girls on the Run staff, and are asked to commit to approximately four hours per week for ten weeks with potential additional weekend time for training and the 5K race. Lead coaches must be at least 21, while assistant coaches must be at least 18. All coaches must pass a background check. The deadline for coaches to sign up is also Feb. 20. For more information, contact www.gotrkc.org.
