New Horizons offers beginner lessons, band rehearsals, both beginning Jan. 20
POSTED: 12/31/2014
Calling all music lovers! Dig out your old instrument and join a group of fun-loving musicians age 50 and beyond in the New Horizons Band. The group will begin band rehearsals and beginner lessons, both starting Jan. 20 at the Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park.

The New Horizons Band is a program of the 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District in conjunction with the University of Missouri - Kansas City's Conservatory of Music and Dance and Meyer Music. The band is currently open to anyone with an instrument and some musical background. The band includes brass, woodwind, and percussion and offers an opportunity to play in small groups and band practice. The band's director is Dr. Lindsey Williams, Assistant Professor of Music Education at UMKC's Conservatory of Music.

Rehearsals for the New Horizons Band take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday beginning Jan. 20. The cost for 17 two-hour sessions is $70 per person for Johnson County residents or $77 per person for nonresidents. To register online at, follow the “Register for Activities” link and complete a barcode search for 26434.

Also offered are Beginner Lessons for folks who have always wanted to play in a band but never learned an instrument. Standard band instruments including flute, clarinet, trombone, percussion, and more, are taught with the needs of non-traditional students in mind. No prior music knowledge or experience is needed. A pre-owned, rented, or purchased instrument is required. Each class includes one hour of lessons and one hour of band practice. The transition into performing with the New Horizons Band is available at the student's comfort level. Beginner lessons also take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday beginning Jan. 20. The cost for eight two-hour sessions is $33 per person for Johnson County residents or $36 for person for nonresidents. To register online for this program, search for barcode 26432.

To find these programs in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under 50 plus and then under fine and performing arts. In the printed catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “performing group music.”

While the JCPRD's 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the District's Registration Department at (913) 831-3359, and if space is available without forfeiting the place of a person over 50, their registration can be taken.

Printed copies of JCPRD’s Activities catalog are available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches.
