|New Hip Hop Dance classes for youth and adults begin in early September|
Four new hip hop dance classes, including three for youth and one for adults, are being offered in early September by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District.
The classes are: Hip Hop Children's Dance for ages five and older; Hip Hop Open for ages eight to 12; Hip Hop Advanced for ages eight to 16; and Adult Hip Hop for ages 16 and older. All four classes have sessions beginning Sept. 2 at the Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee. For any of these classes, the cost for six 45-minue sessions is $60 per person for Johnson County residents or $66 per person for nonresidents.
Hip Hop Children's Dance invites participants to bring their energy, creativity, and imagination on a cultural adventure through hip hop. Using the foundational movement of this dance form, participants will build on rhythm and musicality to create the same kind of fund foundation in which hip hop dance was created. This program meets at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday beginning Sept. 2.
In Hip Hop Open, participants can build their skills at their own pace in a comfortable environment using foundational movements to become the best dancer they can be. The emphasis is on commitment rather than levels of difficulty. This program meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, also beginning Sept. 2.
Hip Hop Advanced will let dancers test their limits and build skills through advanced movements in all the street styles of the hip hop culture. Participants will be exposed to dance styles including breakdance, krump, house, locking, popping, nae nae, doggie, and more through highly technical and energetic choreography. This program meets at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, also beginning Sept. 2.
Adult Hip Hop offers the "best workout you didn't even realize you were doing." Participants will have a blast from the past enjoying the original movement and music that created the culture of hip hop. Each week, the class will take a journey through everything from 90's hip hop to the dances of today. A stated goal of this class is " to build a smile and break a sweat at the same time." Two adults classes are offered on Tuesday beginning in Sept 2 with one starting at 9 a.m. and another starting at 6:30 p.m.
