Fire Ban Implemented in JCPRD Parks
POSTED: 08/05/2003
Signs have been posted at the entrances to all Johnson County Park and Recreation District parks which state: “FIRE HAZARD - All fires & open disposal of smoking materials prohibited.”

Under fire restrictions implemented July 30 immediately, grills and smokers must be placed on a hard surface such as concrete, asphalt, or gravel and extinguished before leaving the park Open flames in fire circles or elsewhere in the parks are prohibited and smoking materials must be disposed of properly. Also suspended are model rocketry permits previously issued by the District.

The restrictions were implemented in response and in accordance with a burning ban for unincorporated areas of the county issued Tuesday by Johnson County Officials. The burning ban in unincorporated areas and the JCPRD restrictions were implemented after consultation with the County’s fire inspector and rural fire district chiefs in response to a combination of dry weather and high winds that have produced conditions that make open burning a threat to public health and safety. The restrictions will remain in effect until further notice and lifting of the ban will be dependant upon the receipt of significant rainfall. Those found in violation of the ban are subject a fine of up to $500 and a jail sentence of up to 30 days.

District facilities affected by the restrictions include: Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa; Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam; Heritage Park, 16050 Pflumm, Olathe; Mill Creek Streamway Park, (various access points over 17 miles); Ernie Miller Park, 909 N. Kansas Highway 7, Olathe; Stanley Park, 6295 W. 159th St., Stilwell; Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park, 12500 W. 119th St., Overland Park; Sunflower Nature Park, 103rd & Edgerton Road, De Soto; Kill Creek Park, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe; and the Tomahawk Recreation Complex, 17501 Midland Drive, Shawnee.
