|June 23 is initial deadline for 2014 UPC Shawnee Mission Triathlon|
June 23 is the initial deadline for the 30th Annual Shawnee Mission Triathlon. This will be the second year United Cerebral Palsy (UPC) of Greater Kansas City will be the event's title sponsor. The triathlon will take place Sunday, July 13, in Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee. Entries will be limited to the first 700 entries. The event typically fills weeks prior to race day. As a result of this event, Shawnee Mission Park will not open for public use until noon on this date.
Since being sponsored by UPC, this event has achieved para-friendly status. This means the triathlon is operated under USA Triathlon guidelines for para-friendly events. Another change made last year which will be continuing in 2014 is that the running portion of the Short Course was extended from 2.4 miles to 3.2 miles to reflect a revised reconfiguration of the Mill Creek Streamway Park's Gary L. Haller Trail.
The UPC Shawnee Mission Triathlon is open to all individuals, ages 15 and older with participants competing in five-year age groups from 15 years old to 90 and older. Team categories for both the Long or Short course are: family, men’s, women’s, or coed, and club. Entries will be limited to the first 700 entries. The event typically fills three weeks prior to race day, so early registration is strongly encouraged.
The Long Course consists of a 1,000-meter swim, followed by an 18-mile bike, and a 4.5-mile run inside Shawnee Mission Park with heats beginning at 7 a.m. on the beach. The Short Course is ideal for novice triathletes as well as more serious competitors desiring a less strenuous course. Distances for the short course include a 500-meter swim, followed by a 9-mile bike, and a 3.2-mile run. Heats for this race will begin at 7:45 a.m. on the beach.
Registration fees for both the Long Course and the Short Courses are $70 for individuals and $100 for teams until June 23. After June 23 the entry fee increases to $80 for individuals and $110 for teams, and increases again to $90 for individuals and $120 for teams after July 6. In addition to the above fees, runners who are not members of USA Triathlon (USAT) must pay a $12 daily user fee or purchase an annual membership for $45.
Each Long and Short course entrant will receive a T-shirt, a swim cap, and a pancake breakfast near Shelter #4. Individual prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female winners. Age group and team awards will be given based on the total number of entrants.

Friday packet pickup for Triathlon participants will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 11, at Elite Cycling, 10673 Mission Road, Leawood, in Mission Farms. Race day packet pickup is for out-of-town triathletes only and will take place from 5 to 6:30 a.m. Sunday under a tent near the Shawnee Mission Park Marina. Also on Saturday is a 4 p.m. orientation session, which is recommended new athletes attend.
The Flapjack Fun Run for children 12 and under will also be held again this year near Shelter No. 3, near the transition area. Triathlon participants and spectators may sign their children up on-site for the half-mile Fun Run to be held at 10 a.m. Registration is free and children’s T-shirts may be purchased.
