|“A Day in the Park” special event returns to JCPRD parks on June 7|
A day-long celebration of our community's trails, parks, and recreational spaces first introduced in 2010 is returning in early June.
On June 7, the Johnson County Park & Recreation District will present A Day In the Park by offering free admission to park beaches, free pedal boat and canoe rentals at Shawnee Mission and Kill Creek park marinas, and by waiving JCPRD fishing permits at Shawnee Mission, Kill Creek, and other parks where fishing is allowed. A number of other free activities are also planned at Shawnee Mission Park.
The June 7 date ties into both the JCPRD’s annual free fishing weekend when both Kansas and District fishing and boating permits are waived, as well as National Trails Day. Note that JCPRD trout permits are still required if you are fishing for trout.
Two dog-related events are also planned on this date in Shawnee Mission Park. Paws in the Park is a free three-hour event which allow pet owners to enjoy a morning at Shawnee Mission Park Beach with their dog, including organized water activities and an opportunity to swim with their dog. Paws at the Park will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. The other event is the new Dog's Day Walk and is for 50 Plus and their dogs. It will involve a two-mile walk on a paved trail beginning at Shelter #3 at 9:30 a.m. This event is primarily for people who have participated in 50 Plus walking programs during the past year and will take the place of the annual picnic which has been held in past years. Newcomers and those who would like to learn more about future 50 plus walks are also invited. The walk will take participants to the small lakes area and back to the beach, where they can join Paws in the Park. Those who wish will picnic afterwards near the concession stand set up for the day at Shelter #3 near the marina parking lot.
Marina hours on June 7 are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Shawnee Mission Park and noon to 6 p.m. at Kill Creek Park. Because of the volume of visitors expected, free rentals are limited to 30 minutes per boat. Beach hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Shawnee Mission Park and noon to 6 p.m. at Kill Creek Park.
A JCPRD booth adjacent to the marina parking lot will be the source of information on activities planned at Shawnee Mission Park throughout the day.
Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., families will have the opportunity to go geocaching with GPS units available for free use. Also during those hours, staff from the Ernie Miller Nature Center will display and give presentations about some of the nature center's animals, and a Johnson County Park Police car will be available to explore and an officer will be on hand to visit with the public. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Johnson County Sailing Society will be giving free sailboat rides and demonstrations on Shawnee Mission Park Lake. At 10 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m., the Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club will present model aircraft demonstrations at the RC Flying Field on the south side of the park.
Shawnee Mission Park is located at 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa. Kill Creek Park is located at 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe.
