Temporary reroutings and closures of a portion of the Gary L. Haller Trail in the Mill Creek Streamway Park near Shawnee Mission Park are anticipated over the next two weeks, Johnson County Park & Recreation District officials announced.
On Tuesday, Aug. 21, crews will begin realignment of about a quarter of a mile of the trail between mile markers 8 and 8.5 on the Haller Trail west of Shawnee Mission Park’s Shelter number eight.
“We are going to try to maintain a way for people to get through, and we are planning to limit the length of any necessary closures,” said JCPRD Planning and Development Manager Cliff Middleton.
An existing trail loop in the area will be utilized as much as possible to allow trail users to pass by the affected area on one side or the other, he added.
The realignment, which involves removing and replacing portions of the trail, was necessary to improve safety.
It was an area where the trail was too steep coming into a bridge and we are going to realign the trail so that it will be a safer connection,” Middleton said.
The work is being completed by streamway park maintenance crews in conjunction with Rieke Brothers Construction and Updike Paving. Completion of the project is dependent upon good weather and could be delayed by inclement conditions.
