Heritage Park to host new Olathe Medical Center 5K & Family Fun Run on Aug. 4
POSTED: 06/27/2012
Providing a morning of family fun which supports a healthy lifestyle is the goal of a new event which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 4, at Heritage Park, 16050 Pflumm, Olathe.

The event is called the Olathe Medical Center 5K and Family Fun Run and was developed by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District and Olathe Medical Center staff.

Participants have a choice of a five-kilometer (3.1 mile) or two-mile route, both of which will take place simultaneously on the park’s paved trails beginning at 8 a.m. The event’s start and finish lines will be located in the park’s marina parking lot. There’s also a free half-mile fun run that will begin at 9 a.m.

The 5K and 2 mile runs will be chip-timed and results will be available online following the event. Everyone who runs or walks is considered a winner and will receive a finisher’s medal!

The event is open to all ages. All participants receive a T-shirt, post-race refreshments, and will be eligible for prize drawings. There will also be post-race family activities including inflatables and playground structures at nearby Shelter #1, and everyone is encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the park!

“We want families to come out, participate in the race, have fun and enjoy all the family activities. We will have refreshments and encourage families to spend the morning in the park,” said Special Events Coordinator Kyle Stegeman.

Stegeman said the new event is an extension of JCPRD’s relationship with Olathe Medical Center which was forged while conducting the Olathe Medical Center Triathlon each September for the past four years. The triathlon is held at the district’s other Olathe-area park, Kill Creek Park. Other sponsors for the family fun run include Robert’s Dairy and Fun Services.

Until July 31, the cost is $14 per person for ages 17 and younger or $16 per person for ages 17 and older. Beginning Aug. 1, this increases to $16 for youth and $18 for adults. For more information about the event, call (913) 826-2955. Participants can register online at

Packet pickups will take place on Friday, Aug. 3 at the Olathe Medical Center Pavilion from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., as well as prior to the event on Saturday morning at the Heritage Park Marina. Walk-in registrations will also be accepted on the day of the event.

Volunteers are needed for this event and additional sponsorships opportunities are still available. For more information, contact Kyle Stegeman at (913) 826-2955.
