Sailing Society will conduct Come Sail with Us event on July 28
POSTED: 06/26/2012

Introducing folks to the fun of sailing is the goal of a Saturday afternoon event which will be presented in late July at Shawnee Mission Lake. Hosted by the Johnson County Sailing Society, the free event is called Come Sail with Us and is open to ages 18 and older.

"We totally enjoy meeting the public and trying to promote the activity of sailing within the Johnson County area," said Sailing Society Spokesman Nick Hockman.

"We started doing these a number of years ago at the end of the sailing classes we teach in order to expand the class's knowledge of different boats and it kind of evolved from there to giving free rides to people who were interested,” added John Truitt, who serves as both the group's commodore and education chair. "It's an education process about what actually goes on. You look out there and you see these boats gliding around and it looks so easy and it really isn't that easy. So it gives them an appreciation for what's actually going on out there as well as hopefully getting them interested in sailing."

The event will begin at noon at the Shawnee Mission Park Marina on the north side of the lake. Participants are invited to bring a sack lunch and dine with members of the Sailing Society and the recently completed Sailing I class. Following lunch, participants will be able to take rides in the personal vessels of society members. While this is listed as a one-hour event, Truitt said it will continue until everyone who has shown an interest has an opportunity to take a ride. This event is dependent upon good weather.

A sailing society event conducted on June 2 in conjunction with A Day in the Park at Shawnee Mission Park drew more than 100 people. The society's other Come Sail with Us event of 2012 took place in late May.

Both society members said event participants have sometimes gone on to take sailing classes offered through JCPRD and to participate in other society events. The Sailing I class which will conduct its final session prior to the Come Sail with Us event on July 28 will begin on July 3. Another Sailing I class begins July 31, while a Sailing II advanced class begins July 10.

To register for one of the sailing classes, go to the Register Here page at jcprd.com and look under Nature & Outdoors in the Adult section of the online Activities catalog.
