A Day in the Park event offers free family fun on June 2
POSTED: 06/01/2012

A day-long celebration of our community's trails, parks, and recreational spaces, which was first introduced in 2010, is returning for its third year on June 2.

"A Day in the Park is a wonderful way to showcase the many amenities in our parks, and for families to spend a fun, free, and healthy day enjoying the beauty of Shawnee Mission Park, in particular," said Superintendent of Recreation Jill Geller. "It’s a great kickoff to summer, and we hope that by encouraging families to spend an early summer day in the park, they will come back again and again throughout the summer months.”

A Day in the Park includes free admission to park beaches, free pedal boat and canoe rentals at Shawnee Mission and Kill Creek park marinas, and a waiver of fishing, boating and archery permits where those activities are allowed. A number of other free activities are also planned at Shawnee Mission Park. Information on the various activities will be available between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at a welcome tent near the marina parking.

A new addition to the event's lineup for 2012 involves the moving of JCPRD’s annual Paws in the Park event to the same date. This now-free event will allow pet owners to enjoy a morning at the beach with their dog, and will include organized water activities and information shared by dog-related business from throughout the area. Paws at the Park will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Shawnee Mission Park swimming beach.

Marina hours on June 2 are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Shawnee Mission Park and noon to 6 p.m. at Kill Creek Park. To allow as many people as possible to participate, free rentals are limited to 30 minutes per boat. Beach hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Shawnee Mission Park and noon to 6 p.m. at Kill Creek Park.

Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., families will have the opportunity to go geocaching with GPS units that will be available for free use. Also during those hours, staff from the Ernie Miller Nature Center will give wildlife presentations near the marina, and a Park Police car will be available to explore and an officer will be on hand to visit with the public.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Johnson County Sailing Society will be giving free sailboat rides and demonstrations on Shawnee Mission Park Lake. At 10 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m., the Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club will present model aircraft demonstrations at the RC Flying Field on the south side of the park.

A Day in the Park coincides with National Trails Day and also ties into JCPRD’s annual Free Fishing Weekend. Unlike the rest of A Day in the Park’s activities, the annual Free Fishing Weekend also includes Sunday, June 3. For these two days, all fishing, boating, and archery permits will be waived.

Shawnee Mission Park is located at 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa. Kill Creek Park is located at 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe. Other parks where fishing could take place include: Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam; Heritage Park, 16050 Pflumm Road, Olathe; Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park, 12500 W. 119th St., Overland Park, and JCPRD's Streamway parks with various access points. For more information, call (913) 438-7275.
