|New playground now open at Antioch Park|
“This was a great opportunity to explore innovative play systems,” said Johnson County Park & Recreation District Park Planner II Tod Hueser. “The Planning and Development Department decided it was in the park’s interest to install a hybrid system combining an ‘alternative’ structure with climbing cables and a traditional deck & panel structure. The playground is intended for the five to 12 age group. Everybody knows there’s always lots of kids at Antioch Park especially with the Turkey Creek Festival upcoming and summer camp groups. The playground was installed just-in-time for this weekend’s festival. Whew!”
The city of Merriam’s annual Turkey Creek Festival will take place throughout Antioch Park on Saturday, May 19. Events include Lion’s Club pancake feed from 7 to 11 a.m., the Turkey Creek Festival 5K Run, a petting zoo, pedal boat rides, free youth activities, specialty food vendors, and giant air structures and inflatables. Also featured as part of the event is JCPRD’s Summertime Arts and Craft Show, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The new playground replaces equipment which was nearly 21 years old. The main play area encompasses an area of about 2,800 square feet, while a nearby swing set features another 1,400 square feet. Both areas feature pour-in-place rubber surfaces for safety around the play equipment. Plans also call for installing new benches around the playground area as well.
