Ride the Pony Express Day Trip for 50 Plus is June 23
POSTED: 05/09/2012
Ride the Pony Express is the name of this trip. The "re-ride" begins at the Patee House, just as the first riders did in 1860, and is a relay from St. Joseph to Sacramento, Calif. Participants will tour the Patee House, a luxury hotel built in 1958, which became the Pony Express headquarters. Inside the museum, travelers can climb aboard the train which brought the mail to St. Joseph. Next up is a guided tour of the nearby Pony Express Museum where they will hear captivating stories, experience interactive exhibits, and visit the museum store. The group will also enjoy a real western-style lunch at the town's oldest restaurant, The Hoof & Horn. To find this program in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under 50 plus categories and then under travel. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “day trip.”

The Ride the Pony Express trip will leave at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, and return at approximately 4:30 p.m. that day. The cost for one seven-hour trip, including lunch, is $69 per person.

While the JCPRD's 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the District's Registration Department at (913) 831-3359, and if space is available without forfeiting the place of a person over 50, their registration can be taken.

The JCPRD's Activities catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online and for updated program listings, visit the District's website at
