JCPRD marinas and beaches will be opening in May
POSTED: 05/01/2012

The Shawnee Mission Park Marina will operate on weekends beginning May 5 as a prelude to the May 26 start of not only its regular season, but that of the Shawnee Mission Park Beach and the Kill Creek Park Beach and Marina as well.

“Having fun in and around the water is just part of summer and we invite everyone to come out and experience our beaches and marinas this year,” said Aquatics & Sports Dome Manager Jim Armstrong. “Whether you want to paddle across a lake or splash around in the shallows at the beach, both are great ways to relax and enjoy warm summer days.”

The Shawnee Mission Park Marina will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 5 and 6, May 12 and 13, and May 19 and 20. Beginning May 26, the marina will be open for its summer season with daily hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Aug. 5. The Kill Creek Park Marina will also open on May 26 with hours of 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, also through Aug. 5.

Both marinas offer boat rentals, including pedal boats, canoe, and kayak rentals. Fishing boats are also available at Shawnee Mission Park. Patrons should be aware that while the Shawnee Mission Park Marina accepts credit cards, the Kill Creek Park Marina does not and neither facility accepts checks. Rental rates can be found at www.jcprd.com. Fishing permits are also available at both marinas.

The Shawnee Mission Park and Kill Creek Park beaches also open for their seasons on May 26. Shawnee Mission Park Beach will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday through Aug. 5. Kill Creek Park Beach will be open only on weekends with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hours of 1 to 5 p.m., also through Aug. 5. Daily rates for children 12 and under and adults over 50 at both facilities are $3 for Johnson County residents and $3.50 for nonresidents. Admission for adults is $5 for Johnson County residents and $5.50 for nonresidents. Season passes are also available.

Both beaches also offer special weekly opportunities for triathletes to practice open water swimming. At Shawnee Mission Park, these are offered on Tuesday and Thursday through Aug. 2, while at Kill Creek Park they are offered every Monday from June 4 through Sept. 4. On the specified nights, the beach is open from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for triathlon training. The cost is $4 per person for Johnson County residents or $4.50 per person for nonresidents.

Shawnee Mission Park is located in both Shawnee and Lenexa with entrances at 7900 Renner Road and 18600 W. 87th St. Parkway. Kill Creek Park is located at 11670 Homestead Lane in Olathe.
