Summer camp spaces still available, but don't delay
POSTED: 05/01/2012

While many of our summer youth camps have already filled, we still have a number of camps offering a wide assortment of summer fun, friendship, and growth opportunities to choose from.

With spaces filling fast, our camp programmers recently put together a list of the camps that still had space available with less than a month remaining before the start of the camp season. The camps they listed range from partial-day programs serving a variety of interests, to full-day programs with supervision from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Most of the full-day camps offer weekly sessions from May 29 through July 30, while the other camps begin throughout the summer.

Outdoor Education Supervisor Bill McGowan indicated the Outdoor Discovery Camp in Shawnee Mission Park under the direction of national-award-winning Senior Park Naturalist Molly Postlewait was one of the programs which still had some vacancies as of the end of April. This popular camp, which also has sessions at Ernie Miller Park that are already filled, is for ages eight through 12. Space was also available in the SOAR Camp for ages 13-16, the Independent Spirit for Girls Camp for ages 13-16, and the Girl Power Adventure Camp for ages 12-14.

Fine Arts Coordinator Sarah Lenahan pointed to openings in a newly-announced July session of the All About Art Camp for ages eight to 12, the We Got the Beat Dance Camp for ages eight to 12, and the In Stitches Improv Theatre Camp for ages nine to 14 at The Theatre in the Park. She also noted that spaces remained in the Rockin’ Robots and Journey Into Outer Space Mad Science Camps for ages seven to 13.

Children’s Services Specialist Jennifer Anderson said the best bets for openings among camps offered by her department included Preschool Enrichment Camp at the Barker Road, Antioch Park, New Century Fieldhouse, and Roeland Park Community Center locations, the Summer Escapades camps at Antioch Park’s Shelter #3 and at Harmon Park, both for ages five through ten, as well as at Shawnee Mission Park’s Shelter #8 for ages nine to 12, and Xroads Camp at Antioch Park’s Shelter #1 for ages 11 to 14.

Heading into May there were also openings in some of the Children’s Services department’s Indoor Summer Camps for ages five through 12, including those at Belmont, Prairie Ridge, and Starside schools in the De Soto School District, Moonlight school in the Gardner School District, and Brookwood, Merriam Park and Benninghoven schools in the Shawnee Mission School District.

Youth Sports Coordinator Stephanie Chase said sports camp openings included Summer Break Basketball Camps for grades kindergarten through 12 at Okun Fieldhouse and New Century Fieldhouse, Summer Break Volleyball Camp for grades three through eight at Okun and NCF, T-Ball Camp for ages five through seven and Baseball/Softball Coach Pitch Camp for ages six through eight, both at Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park and at Shawnee Mission Park.

Corporate and Community Wellness Assistant Kim Gross listed openings in the Game Design Apps Camp for ages 10 to 17 and Swordsmanship IS a Sport Camp for ages seven through 13.

Even if you don’t see a camp you’re interested in among those listed above, be sure to check our website using the instructions below or call registration at (913) 831-3359 for openings in our other camps.

Registrations for this year’s camps, which are taken on a first-come, first-served basis, began in early February with the publication of the district’s Summer Camps & Clinics Guide. This year’s camps offer a record-setting lineup of more than 45 programs for ages three through 17.

Financial assistance is available for some camps on a limited basis for qualifying families. For grant information and application materials, call (913) 236-1219.
