|HP3 event, including Duathlon, 5K and 10K, set for May 10 at Heritage Park|
For more than 25 years the Johnson County Park & Recreation District has sponsored an early summer duathlon at Heritage Park. In 2013, the event added 5K and 10K runs along with the Duathlon, and these are continuing this year.
The event, now known as the HP3, consists of a duathlon including 3.1 mile run, a 17-mile bike, followed by another 3.1 mile run on a relatively flat course. The 5K and 10K routes are inside and slightly outside Heritage Park and incorporate the natural beauty of the trail system around the park. All three events will take place beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10.
To find these events in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under adult and then under special events. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword “duathlon.”

The duathlon portion of this year's HP3 will also be the first in a new Kansas Duathlon Series in conjunction with two other regional park and recreation agencies. In addition to the duathlon at Heritage Park, the series will also include the Prairie Punisher Duathlon to be presented on July 12 by Gardner Parks & Recreation, and the Dog Daze Duathlon to be presented on Aug. 10 by Leavenworth Parks & Recreation. Prize packages for the new series are still being put together by the three agencies and will likely include gear and other items related to training. The winners will be selected based on point acquisition relating to a participant’s placement at each event.
