|JCPRD Board seeks input on name for Shawnee recreational facility|
“It’s a fantastic location with visibility right off of Shawnee Mission Parkway,” said JCPRD Superintendent of Recreation Jill Geller. “And considering the demographics of Shawnee with young families, I think that location alone is going to be a great boon to our gymnastics program, as well as the many other programs that will be provided.”
Acquisition of the facility involved an exchange for the former Athletic Training Center at 9301 W. 73rd St., Merriam. The district closed the fitness center and gymnastics programming at the Athletic Training Center in mid-December and took possession of the Shawnee property on Nov. 30. The agency is currently in the process of cleaning and planning minor renovations.
Since the county agency cannot sell property, a title company purchased the Shawnee property from a private owner, then exchanged it for the county’s Merriam facility, which was in turn sold to Shawnee Mission Medical Center by the title company.
JCPRD’s plans for the facility include relocating the district’s gymnastics program to the site, operating a half-day preschool program, and offering dance, art and fitness programs. The recreational facility is tentatively scheduled to reopen in February as the Mill Creek Activity Center.
In accordance with district policy, the Board of Park & Recreation Commissioners is currently seeking input from the public on the proposed name for the facility. For consideration prior to the formal naming of the facility, input must be received on or before Jan. 20. Comments and/or alternate suggestions may be submitted to the board by sending an email to email@example.com or by sending a letter to: Board Chair, JCPRD Administration Building, 7904 Renner Road, Shawnee Mission, KS 66219.
