“A Day in the Park” special event returns to JCPRD parks on June 4
POSTED: 05/20/2011
On June 4, the Johnson County Park & Recreation District will present A Day In the Park by offering free admission to park beaches, free pedal boat and canoe rentals at park marinas, and by waiving JCPRD fishing permits at Shawnee Mission, Heritage, and Kill Creek parks. A number of other free activities are also planned at Shawnee Mission Park.
The June 4 date ties into both the JCPRD’s annual free fishing weekend when both Kansas and District fishing and boating permits are waived, as well as National Trails Day.

Marina hours on June 4 are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Shawnee Mission Park and noon to 6 p.m. at the Kill Creek and Heritage Park Marinas. Beach hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Shawnee Mission Park and noon to 6 p.m. at the Kill Creek Park Beach.

A JCPRD adjacent to the marina parking lot will be the source of information on the additional activities planned at Shawnee Mission Park throughout the day.

From 10 a.m. to noon, mountain bike demonstrations will be presented by the Earth Riders Trail Association. Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., families will have the opportunity to go geocaching with GPS units available for free use. For those who have always wanted to give disc golf a try, the JCPRD and the Kansas City Flying Disc Club will have discs available for check-out near Hole #1 of Shawnee Mission Park’s disc golf course, located near the North Walnut Grove area. From 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m, staff from the Ernie Miller Nature Center will display and give presentations about some of the nature center's animals. Also from 10:30 to 3:30 p.m., the Johnson County Sailing Society will be giving free sailboat rides and demonstrations on Shawnee Mission Park Lake. At 11 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m., the Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club will present model aircraft demonstrations at the RC Flying Field on the south side of the park. The sword theater group Sword Serenity will also be giving demonstrations throughout the day.

Park patrons can always bring a picnic lunch to the park, but on this date, concessions will also be available for purchase at Shelter 3 near the marina parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Shawnee Mission Park is located at 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa. Heritage Park is located at 16050 Pflumm Road, Olathe. Kill Creek Park is locate at 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe.
More than 500 people participated when "A Day in the Park" was offered in 2010.
