Final Renew The Park Workshop Planned for Antioch Park
POSTED: 01/29/2003

Alternative master plans for Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, will be presented for public input when a second Renew the Park workshop takes place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday Feb. 12 in the meeting room in Antioch Park's Building A.

Using previous input from the public and Johnson County Park and Recreation District staff gathered during a Walk the Park Workshop on Dec. 14 and an earlier Renew the Park Workshop on Jan. 15, consultants with Theis Doolittle Associates Inc. (TDA) of Kansas City, Mo., have developed alternate plans for the park. During the Feb. 12 meeting, participants will have a chance to review the plans and express their likes and dislikes.

"We'll be presenting two to three alternative plans for possible layouts of the park and then we'll be receiving comments on those plans," said Theis Doolittle Principal Paul Novick.

Input received during this second and last public meeting will be used by consultants in their formulation of a proposed final master plan for Antioch Park, which will be presented for the District Board's Consideration during its March 26 meeting.

Based on previous projects in which he's used this process, Novick said he anticipates one of the alternates to be presented during the February meeting "will set the pace and mold" for the final plan with some possible modifications and borrowing of ideas from the other alternates.

Implementation of Antioch Park's new master plan is scheduled to begin later this year with nearly $1 million in renovations budgeted for the initial phase. Anticipated renovations include: extensive improvements to both of the park's lakes; landscaping and parking lot improvements; pedestrian path and drainage improvements; repaving of basketball courts; and office building renovations.

In addition to the public meetings, individuals can send their comments concerning the Antioch Park project to the District by email at map2020@jocoks.com or by mail at: Map 2020, 17501 Midland Dr., Shawnee, KS 66217. Comments should be submitted by Feb. 14.
