|Registrations Now Being Taken for JCPRD's 2003 Summer Day Camps|
Registrations are now being taken for the Johnson County Park and Recreation District's summer day camps for children. A variety of camps are being offered this year, but first a word of warning - camp registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis and many camps fill quickly. Please register early to assure your choice of programs!
Here's a brief overview of the JCPRD's returning camp offerings for 2003 (For information on this year's new camp offerings, see the separate news release). For more specific information, including schedules, costs and locations, click on the links to the individual camps provided below or consult the printed version of the Spring ACTIVITIES catalog, available now.
Crossroads camp is designed for youth ages 11-13 who are strongly interested in learning the basic skills of outdoor recreational activities. Camp sessions begin weekly from June 2 through Aug. 8.
SUMMER Escapades, for children 6 - 7 and 8 - 10 , offers exciting weekly activities. Each week will include crafts, group and individual activities, plus two scheduled field trips, and three days of swimming. Camp sessions begin weekly from June 2 through Aug. 8.
Outdoor Discovery camp for ages 6-12, offers kids a fun week of discovering the outdoors with park naturalists and rangers. Activities include hikes, environmental games, nature crafts, storytelling sessions, field trips, swimming, archery, fishing, and boating. Camp sessions begin weekly from May 27 through Aug. 1.
Aimed at ages 10 to 14 is Junior Naturalist Camp. This program allows young naturalists to explore like Lewis and Clark. Under the leadership of a naturalist, they will be among the first to explore the new Kill Creek Park, the TimberRidge Adventure Center, and other parks. Activities will include hiking, canoeing, stream hikes, insect study, wildlife presentations, and much more. This camp will be offered once beginning July 7.
Amazing Adventures Camp is for ages 11 to 14. Many of the activities will take place at Kill Creek Park's Timber Ridge Adventure Center and will include rock climbing, belaying and repelling, mastering knots, canoeing, animal tracking, camp cooking and stargazing. This camp will be offered once beginning June 17.
Also offered are two half-day summer camps for younger children at the Ernie Miller Nature Center. SUMMER TOTS allows children ages 4 and 5 to explore the park's forest and fields. This camp is offered beginning June 9, June 23, and July 14. SUMMER VACATION allows children 6 to 8 to hike the park and explore different habitats. This camp is offered beginning June 16 and July 7.
Summer Preschool Camp is for ages 3 through 5. Each week, children will enjoy a variety of learning opportunities such as dramatic play, creative arts, cooking, socialization, field trips, and water/pool play. Camp sessions begin weekly from June 3 through July 29.
Theatre Camp for ages 10-15 is designed to touch on the many aspects of theater. Participants will perform in an end-of-the-session production. This camp consists of four 2.5-hour sessions weekly for five weeks beginning June 16.
Discovery ART CAMP provides imaginative fun for children ages 9 - 12 and encourages exploration of individual creativity through drawing, painting, design, clay and crafts. This camp consists of four 2.5-hour sessions and is offered beginning June 16, June 23, and July 7.
NEW HORIZONS CAMP FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS is designed for special needs students between the ages of 6 and 18. Eight weeks of 7-hour daily programs begin June 2. CAMP CARAVAN is for current Shawnee Mission Special Olympics participants ages 8 to 21. Participants have the opportunity to visit various outdoor areas and tourist sites in the metro area while learning skills associated with the outdoors and recreation. Five one- and two-day trips are offered between June 19 and Sept. 8.
