Big Bad Pumpkin Derby sponsored by Westlake Ace Hardware at Shawnee Mission Park returns for a third year on Oct. 23, is joined by new Canine Costume Contest

Both events are free to spectators but have small fees for participation. Perform a catalog search for the keywords “fall fun” to find these programs in the Johnson County park & Recreation District's Activities Catalog and online listings.

The pumpkin derby begins at 10 a.m.. Whether you come as a competitor or a spectator, this event is sure to be one of your best fall experiences. Past events have drawn hundreds of spectators and dozens of entries. All interested parties are invited to build and enter their own pumpkin race car and compete in this double-elimination derby. Entries must be constructed from real pumpkins and use two independent axles with wheels attached and which must run through the pumpkin. The derby will take place on a fast course in the theater parking lot. No chassis of any kind, such as skateboards or toy trucks, can be used and no motorized enhancements are allowed. Awards will be given in a variety of categories. For complete event rules, construction tips, and design and award categories, visit The fee to participate in the race is $25 per entry. Advance registration is required for all racers.

Big Bad Canine's Costume Contest will begin at 11 a.m. If your pooch enjoys dressing up or at least tolerates it, don't miss this opportunity to show off your four-legged friends in this first-ever canine costume contest and parade. Entries will be eligible for prizes including most creative costume, cutest, scariest, most unusual, and best duo. The fee to participate in the contest and parade is $5 per entry.
