|Haunted Kansas event, Jack-O-Lantern Contest Planned at Ernie Miller Park on Oct. 23|

For the Jack-O-Lantern Contest, carve your best-looking pumpkin and drop if off at the Ernie Miller Nature Center between 1 and 4 p.m. on Oct. 23. This free event is open to individuals as well as groups including families, scouts, home schools, and classrooms. Jack-O-Lanterns will be on display during the Haunted Kansas event, and will be available for pickup from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24. First place receives a free group program at Ernie Miller Nature Center (a value of up to $43). Second place gets a $20 gift certificate to the nature center's gift shop, while third place receives a $10 certificate. For more information about this program, call (913) 764-7759.
Haunted Kansas will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and is for ages eight and older as well as all children accompanied by a parent or guardian. As darkness falls, participants will walk the trails of Ernie Miller Park and listen as characters from the past share legends around the campfire. Expect a shiver down the spine and a mild case of goose bumps for those who dare enter the forest on this autumn evening. Group sessions begin every 20 minutes and the program lasts about an hour. Be sure to dress for the weather. The cost is $5 per person, including adults, and is payable on-site. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (913) 764-7759. In case of inclement weather, this program will take place indoors.
