|Ernie Miller Nature Center plans 25th birthday celebration on Sept. 18|
The birthday Celebration is planned from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the nature center, which is located at 909 N. Kansas-7 Highway, Olathe. This event will include birthday cake and different stations for stories, animal presentations, crafts, and more. Staff are also preparing a scrapbook about the center's history.
Ernie Miller Nature Center opened in the fall of 1985 as Johnson County's first nature center. Since then, it has been through two expansion projects which have more than doubled its space. In 2009, the center set a new high with 33,790 visitations for the year.
The center provides a laboratory for learning, understanding, and admiring nature through programs presented to the public as well as school and organized groups by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District's Interpretive Department. The center, which is the site of a number of nature and cultural-oriented special events throughout the year, includes a wildlife viewing room overlooking bird feeders and water features, a 500-gallon aquarium featuring native fish, as well as exhibits and displays.
