New driving range to open at Tomahawk Hills Golf Course
POSTED: 08/04/2010

The course's previous driving range closed earlier this year as work got under way on a new and updated clubhouse for the course. The new clubhouse will open later this year on what was previously part of the driving range. The existing clubhouse will be removed once the new facility is complete.

The new driving range is located to the west of the parking lot in the space previously occupied by the Tomahawk Sports Dome, which was completely removed in mid-2009 as a first step toward realigning the driving range. The space occupied by the new range is "longer and better," said Superintendent of Parks and Golf Courses Bill Maasen. "It has a bigger tee box and it's a longer driving range and a safer driving range."

He explained that at the old range, golfers would hit at an angle towards Midland Dive, but if they hit straight north, they could clear the net, or hook into the course's parking lot. The new range faces away from the parking lot and parallel to the new net rather than towards it, providing an effective range of well over 300 yards.

Sixty-foot poles were installed earlier this week along Midland Drive to support new safety nets, which will further protect the road and adjacent properties. Distance signs are being fabricated and it is expected they will be installed shortly.

The new driving range is considered temporary because long-range plans call for this area to eventually become the site of hole #1, at which point the driving range would be moved to the south to where the existing hole #1 is located. No funding or timeframe for these moves is set at this time.

Tomahawk Hills Golf Course is located at 17501 Midland Drive, Shawnee, and can be reached at (913) 631-8000. Buckets of balls for the range are available for $3 or $5.
