KC Wildlands Sets Feb. 2 Workday at Shawnee
POSTED: 01/15/2003
A Kansas City Wildlands workday has been scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Shawnee Mission Park.

Interested parties are invited to assist with land stewardship in the form of removal of woody growth from a prairie remnant located near Ogg Road, on the north side of the lake. The aim of this workday is to actually expand the prairie remanent at the site by removing woody growth along the perimeter of the prairie and connecting with another small prairie remnant to the north.

A similar land stewardship program will also take place simultaneously on Feb. 2 at two locations in Kansas City, Mo.: the Blue River Glades Natural Area and at Limestone Glade in Swope Park.

The Johnson County Park and Recreation District has conducted in similar works at Shawnee Mission Park and other locations in the past in conjunction with KC WildLands, a conservation coalition initiated in early 2001. The group is "a conservation coalition protecting biological diversity through citizen-based restoration of Kansas City's natural communities." Other charter members of the group include park and recreation agencies throughout the area, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and Kansas Wildlife and Parks.

For additional information or to register for the Feb. 2 workday, please call KC Wildlands Coordinator, Linda Lebrhaum at (816) 561-1061 x116 or e-mail at
