"I think the greatest challenge is to find the right way to deal with the economic impacts around the county and still maintain a park system that is beneficial to all of our constituents who visit the parks," Adams said of the coming year. "I think the challenge is how do we maintain the parks, how do we give our customers the best value for the tax dollar that they have spent on those parks?"
He added that a major goal is to continue progress toward implementing the District's 20-year Master Action Plan, MAP 2020.
"Even though we're having very difficult economic times, it's important for us to stay focused with the goals and objectives surrounding MAP 2020," he added.
Adams is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the DiscoverTheOutdoors.com LLC a technology company which serves the outdoor industry and its more than 150 million annual participants. Adams founded the company in May of 2000 and has helped establish it as the most extensive outdoor internet site on the World Wide Web with well over 4 million pages of information. From 1998 to 2005, Adams served as host and executive producer of the television show Heartland Adventures Outdoor Show (later called Discover the Outdoors Television) which in 2004 won a Golden Moose Award from the Outdoor Channel. From 1996 to 1997, he was interim General Manager of the Kansas City Wizards Major League Soccer team. Earlier, Adams played professional football for ten years starting with his 1973 draft by the San Diego Chargers and four years with the Kansas City Chiefs.
A native of Riverside, Calif., Adams has lived in Johnson County for about 35 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from Utah State University with a double minor in recreation and physical education.
He is a member of the Kansas City Chiefs Ambassadors; NFL Alumni; National Wild Turkey Federation, where he is a life member; National Wildlife Federation; Pope & Young Club; Boone & Crockett Club; Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation; Whitetail Unlimited; Ducks Unlimited; Quail Unlimited; National Rifle Association; Wheelin’ Sportsman; International Bowhunting Organization; and the Grand National Quail Club.
Other 2010 Officers
Other Board officers for 2010 elected during the Board’s Dec. 16 meeting are: George J. Schlagel, vice chair; Nancy Wallerstein, secretary; Bill Flohrs, treasurer; and Steve Baru, assistant secretary. Board Members Marvin "Doc" Wollen and Gary K. Montague have both formally resigned from the Board effective Jan. 31, 2010, and those positions remain vacant until the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners appoints replacements.
