"Bully Proof" Little Champs Grapplers
POSTED: 12/09/2009
The classes are Little Champs Grapplers class for ages five through seven, and Jr. Grapplers class for ages eight to 14. Both programs take place at the Tae Kwon Do Academy, 7721 W. 151st St., Overland Park. Perform a catalog search for the keyword "martial arts" to find this program in the JCPRD's Activities Catalog and online listings.

Little Champs Grapplers class utilizes a series of 10 "Gracie Games" which teach participants essential self-defense techniques. By playing these fun and exciting games, participants develop strong reflexes in the execution of basic techniques as they unconsciously learn fundamental principles of leverage and control. This class will take place at 5:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday beginning Jan. 4. Class cost for eight 45-minute lessons is $60 per person for Johnson County residents or $66 for nonresidents.

Jr. Grapplers teaches 15 essential techniques they must know in order to defend themselves if attacked. The best part is that these are all nonviolent control tactics designed to minimize injury to the bully if used during a real fight. This class will take place at 6:15 p.m. Monday beginning Jan. 4. Class cost for four 45-minute lessons is $35 per person for Johnson County residents or $39 for nonresidents.

In the late 1920s, Grand Master Helio Gracie created Gracie or Brazilian jiu-jitsu after he realized that he was physically too frail to utilize the traditional Japanese techniques. Proven over the last 80 years to be the most reliable system for a smaller person to defeat a larger, more athletic opponent, the techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu are based on precise timing and effective use of leverage so that virtually anyone can do it regardless of their size or athletic ability.
