|Johnson County Artists to be honored During Art Fest 2009 Nov. 1 through 22 at Ernie Miller Nature Center|
Sponsored by Johnson Ballweg & Tuley, LC, Johnson County Art Fest 2009 was open to all juried artists 21 years of age and older currently residing in Johnson County. In all, more than 200 entries were submitted by 99 artists for this year's show. This is up from 90 artists who submitted artwork in 2008.
There is no admission charge to the exhibit which will be open for public viewing during the Nature Center’s regular hours: 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The nature center will be closed on Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. This year's exhibit features a creative array of art including paintings, ceramics, photography, mixed media, weaving, and blown and fused glass. Retail prizes for the selected pieces range from $55 to $5,500. All of the pieces are available for purchase.
Prizes and purchase awards for the show will total more than $4,000. This includes a Best of Show of $1,000, Second Prize of $750, and a Third Prize of $500. There will also be purchase awards of at least $2,000 for art to be placed on permanent display in Johnson County Park and Recreation District facilities.
The juror for the 2009 show is Marcus Cain, curator of the Kansas City Jewish Museum and Epsten Gallery, as well as owner and director of SATELLITE Exhibitions curatorial initiative. He has previously taught painting and drawing at the Kansas City Art Institute and served as editor of Review Magazine.
Art Fest is a unique exhibition exclusively showcasing Johnson County artists. Initially presented in celebration of the county’s Sesquicentennial in 2005, Art Fest has continued as an annual tribute to the widely diverse talents of the many artists residing in Johnson County.
