Staying home alone and babysitting are topics of separate JCPRD classes starting Oct. 11
POSTED: 09/18/2013

Separate programs meant to help prepare children and young teens for the responsibilities of staying home alone or babysitting others are being offered in mid-October by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

Both programs will take place on Friday, Oct. 11, at the Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park. For either class, the cost for one 75-minute program is $30 per person for Johnson County residents or $33 for nonresidents. Be sure to bring pen and paper to class.

Home Alone is for ages nine through 14 and is meant to make participants feel confident and safe when staying home alone. Safety rules, how to recognize and handle emergencies, first aid basics, and much more will be covered. Handouts and snacks will be provided. This class will take place beginning at 1 p.m.

Babysitting 101 is for ages ten through 16 and will be presented as a fun, informative workshop covering babysitting basics such as personal safety, first aid basics, emergency situations, diapering, and feeding infants and toddlers. Participants will also learn how to prepare easy snacks, initiate fun games, and creative craft ideas, and how to set up a babysitting business. Each participant will receive a notebook and certificate of completion. This class will take place beginning at 2:30 p.m.

To find these programs in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under youth and then under enrichment & special interests. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword “education.”

The JCPRD's Activities catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online and for updated program listings, see the District's website at www.jcprd.com.
