Cardboard Boat Regatta cancelled for 2009
POSTED: 07/01/2009

"Interest in the regatta has been hampered by our slow economy," said Childrens Services Manager Kim Chappelow-Lee, who helped plan the event. "Event planners feel a well-attended inaugural event is key to assuring that the regatta becomes an annual tradition enjoyed by Johnson Countians for many years to come."

As originally planned, this year's event would have taken place on Saturday, July 25, at the Shawnee Mission Park Beach. It would have featured a Novice Division where participants would have built their craft on-site, and a Master's Division where participants would have built their boats off-site. Both groups would have raced for prizes on a 200-yard semicircular coarse starting and ending at the beach.

Chappelow-Lee said next year’s regatta will again be slated for the last Saturday in July, or July 24, 2010. For general information about the regatta visit www.jcprd.com.

Organizers said part of the appeal of this kind of event is that the boat building and racing process fosters learning, teamwork, and a lot of fun.
