|National Trails Day Kickoff planned for free AARP 10-week Walking program on June 6|
As they did last year, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the National Park and Recreation Association (NRPA), and the 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District have joined forces to bring this program to this area and fulfill their mission of promoting health and wellness. Over the past three years, more than 50,000 people in 28 states have participated in this program.
The AARP 10-Week Walking Program will help participants find safe places to walk, and provide tools and support to help them take personal responsibility for their health and stick with their exercise plans. Each participant will receive a free step counter and guidebook, and be invited to sign-up for a walking group and weekly educational sessions on fitness and nutrition. A signup event for this program will take place beginning at Leawood's Tomahawk Creek Park,11600 Tomahawk Creek Parkway, Leawood, beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, which is also national Trails Day. Participants will walk from Tomahawk Creek Park to I-Lan Park, 126th and Nall, where there will be vendors and a registration table for the walking program.
