|New 50 Plus program seeks Thrill Seekers for ballooning, skydiving adventures|
If you're interested in some high-flying, adrenaline-pumping excitement this fall, the 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District has a new program which might be of interest.
Thrill Seekers is the name of this program, which is offering opportunities to experience hot air ballooning or tandem skydiving during separate programs.
Hot air ballooning with Sunshine Balloons of Waldron, Mo., near Parkville, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21, while tandem skydiving with Falcon Skydiving of Lake Lotawana, Mo., will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5. Both programs depart from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam. Skydiving has an 8 a.m. departure time for a full-day program, while ballooning participants will leave at 5 p.m. for an evening program.
JCPRD's role in these programs is very much akin to its travel programs. For a fee of $25 for Johnson County residents or $29 for nonresidents, JCPRD provides transportation to and from the activity site, as well as a one-hour pre-activity meeting beginning at 1 p.m. on the Wednesday before the activity and a one-hour post activity meeting at 1 p.m. on the Monday after the activity. Both of these meetings will take place in Antioch Park. Using detailed instructions from JCPRD, participants will need to contact and schedule their adventure with the experience vendors. This will involve an additional fee of $155 per person for hot-air ballooning and/or $210 per person for tandem skydiving.
Prior to the pre-meeting, participants will receive a letter detailing who they need to call, what they need to pay (the fees listed above), what they will need to wear on the day of their adventure, physical requirements, and pertinent information from the companies. At the pre meeting, participants will review the requirements, sign waivers, go over details of the actual event schedule. There will also be an opportunity to ask and get answers to any questions to make sure everyone is ready for the day of the event.
At the post-activity meeting, a 50 plus staff member will share photos they will be taking during the event. Participants will also be asked for their feedback on the program and suggestions for future Thrill Seekers adventures.
For more information about Thrill Seekers, contact 50 Plus Coordinator Jenny Smith at (913) 826-2859.
To find these programs in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under 50 plus and then enrichment & special interests. In the printed catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword “adventure.”
While the JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the District’s Registration Department at (913) 831-3359, and if space is available without forfeiting the place of a person over 50, their registration can be taken.
The JCPRD Activities catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches. To register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online and for updated program listings, visit the district’s website at www.jcprd.com.
