|Karen Smyers to Participate in Shawnee Mission Medical Center Triathlon|
During the past 17 years as a professional triathlete, Smyers has won numerous titles including several World Championships and National titles, including a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships in 1995. Her victory at the short-course Triathlon World Championship just five weeks later earned her the distinction of being the only woman ever to win triathlon's two most prestigious events in the same year.
Although in recent years she has endured the challenge of a severed hamstring muscle, a time-out for the birth of her daughter, a knockdown by the eighteen wheeler while cycling, a battle with thyroid cancer, she was able to win her seventh National Championship title in August 2001. Through it all, she maintains her optimism, sense of humor and a passion for racing.
Smyers is a 1983 graduate of Princeton University and a resident of Lincoln, Mass., with her daughter, Jenna, and her husband and training partner Michael King.
The Shawnee Mission Triathlon is presented by Shawnee Mission Medical Center and is sponsored by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District. For more information, call (913) 831-3355 or register online at active.com through July 10.
