Series of fall Outdoor Fun programs begins with Sept. 13 session
POSTED: 08/21/2013
A series of five one-hour stand-alone nature-related activities for young children are planned this fall by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District's Natureplay Preschool located at the Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee. All five programs are for ages three to five, take place beginning at 10 a.m. on a Friday, and will last about an hour and one-half each.

The first of these is called Stream Search and will take place on Sept. 13. Young explorers are invited to pull on their galoshes, and do some splishin' and splashin' in the creek. This session will meet at the Midland Drive Access Point of JCPRD's Mill Creek Streamway Park, located west of Interstate 435 at 19405 Midland Drive, Shawnee.

Other programs in this series include: Nature Journaling on Oct. 4 at the Barker Road Access Point of the Mill Creek Streamway Park, located north of Shawnee Mission Parkway at 5946 Barker Road, Shawnee; Autumn All Around on Oct. 18, also at the Barker Road Access Point; Nap or Flap on Nov. 1 at the Mill Creek Activity Center; and For the Birds on Dec. 6, again at the Mill Creek Activity Center.

The cost for each of the five fall offerings is $14 per child for Johnson County residents or $15 per child for nonresidents. To find these programs in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under preschool then under nature & outdoors. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “outdoor fun.”

Natureplay Preschool is a discovery-based learning program for ages three through five. While the program offers half-day preschool with two-, three-, to five-days-a-week options, these new stand-alone programs are meant to supplement other learning opportunities and provide children extended opportunities for outdoor exploration. Natureplay Director Rosanna Munoz holds degrees in biology and early childhood education has been leading JCPRD early childhood programs since 2002. For questions about Natureplay Preschool or the fall outdoor fun programs, call Munoz at (913) 826-2958.

The JCPRD's Activities catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online and for updated program listings, see the District's website at
