New Moths in the Moonlight event is Sept. 6 at Ernie Miller Park
POSTED: 08/14/2013
Like a moth to a flame, you can be drawn into the secret lives of moths during a new special event set for Friday, Sept. 6, at the Johnson County Park & Recreation District's Ernie Miller Park, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe.

Moths in the Moonlight is the name of this event, which is for children ages seven and up accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants will learn about these fascinating insects, including their lifecycle, and the differences between butterflies and moths. Black lights will be used to attract moths and other nocturnal insects and there will also be interactive games to play.

To find this program in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under youth and then under special events. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “nature & outdoors.”

This event will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The cost for the one-and-one-half-hour event is $3 per person, including adults, and can be paid on-site. Reservations are recommended and can be obtained by calling (913) 764-7759.

Both moths and butterflies are members of the order Lepidoptera, which means “scale winged,” a reference to the powdery scales that come off their wings when you touch them. A celebration of moths' more colorful relatives, the butterflies, is also scheduled at the nature center on Sept. 14 when an event called Monarchs & Wildflowers is presented.

The Johnson County Park & Recreation District's Activities catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches. For more about the Butterflies and Wildflowers Walk, call (913) 764-7759.
