|New Picnic Program Off to Strong Start|
The Johnson County Park and Recreation District's new Corporate Picnic program has gotten off to a strong start.
The program was initiated earlier this year by JCPRD Special Events staff members Recreation Specialist Jill Leiker and Recreation Assistant Keri Sanborn.
As of mid-June, the program had already successfully planned and executed two events and had five more confirmed for later this summer.
"We hoped to do five events (total) this year, so we're happy," Leiker said. "I think we'll still probably get more interest for fall picnics because we'll do events up to October."
Leiker said she has also received a large number of inquiries about the program, including a three-week period in which she received two calls per day about the program.
"Company human resource departments love this because it's a one-stop shop," she said. "They call us, we do the rest."
"The rest" can involve finding a location, arranging for food, tents, chairs, and extra amenities such as moonwalks and organized activities for groups of 50 or more.
Of the events booked so far, four are at Shawnee Mission Park, two are at Heritage Park's Blackbob Island, and one is at Antioch Park. All have been company events and the largest of these is a picnic for over 300 planned for July.
Picnic services are currently offered at the three parks mentioned above, but Leiker said she expects to expand this to catered offerings for indoor JCPRD facilities, such at the Tomahawk Recreation Complex, in the fall.
She also expects the program to expand in 2003 since it will be in place from the start of the year when people begin reserving shelters.
