Shawnee Mission Park Marina Open Weekends Beginning May 5 & 6
POSTED: 04/27/2007

The Shawnee Mission Park Marina is scheduled to operate on the weekends of May 5 and 6, May 12 and 13, and May 19 and 20 prior to opening daily for the summer season on May 26.

The marina's weekend hours will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The marina offers boat rentals, including canoes, pedal boats, two-person sailboats, and fishing boats. Rental rates are listed in the Summer Activities catalog and on the District's website at www.jcprd.com Fishing permits are also available at the marina.

This year's summer marina season at Shawnee Mission Park will be shorter than usual due to plans to reduce the lake's water level by up to 10 feet beginning July 9. The drawdown is required to allow dredging of the lake to remove accumulated silt, to facilitate the construction of a wetlands at the lake's southeast end, and to make improvements to the lake's dam. The goal of the project is to improve the lake's water quality and fishery. Officials anticipate the drawdown will take two to three weeks to complete, and depending on weather and rainfall, the lake will be kept at a reduced level until it can be returned to normal levels by spring rains in 2008. Although a specific date has not been set, it is expected the marina will be closed in late July after water levels at the marina docks become too low for these activities.

Shawnee Mission Park is located at 7900 Renner Road in Shawnee and Lenexa. For more information during business hours, call (913) 888-1990. Prior to the opening dates or on weekdays, call (913) 236-1240.

The Johnson County Park and Recreation District's other two marina operations, Kill Creek Park and Heritage Park, will open for their summer seasons May 26 and June 2, respectively. Kill Creek Park and Heritage Park, will close their summer seasons on Aug. 12 and Aug. 6, respectively.
